The Blue Mosque

Standing in the heart of Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet Square, the Blue Mosque (officially: Sultan Ahmet Mosque) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Historic Areas of Istanbul [Source: UNESCO World Heritage Centre] and one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Built in the early 17th century under Sultan Ahmed I, its breathtaking six minarets, cascading domes, and intricate Iznik tiles make it a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture.

Whether you're drawn to its stunning interior design, spiritual ambiance, or rich history, visiting the Blue Mosque is an unforgettable experience.  As the Blue Mosque is an active place of worship, attracting millions of visitors each year, planning your trip beforehand is highly recommended

  • Find below our essential visitor information, tips, and frequently asked questions.

Highlights of the Blue Mosque

Discover the most remarkable features of the Blue Mosque, showcasing its Ottoman-era grandeur and artistic mastery.

The Six Minarets

Unlike most mosques, which typically have one or two minarets, the Blue Mosque stands out with six, a feature that caused controversy when it was built. To resolve the dispute, Sultan Ahmed I financed an additional minaret for the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Today, these towering structures define Istanbul’s skyline.

The Central Dome

The Blue Mosque’s central dome reaches 43 meters in height and spans 23.5 meters in diameter, creating a vast open space. It is supported by four massive "Elephant Foot" pillars, which distribute the dome’s weight while preserving its elegant design. The painted calligraphy and patterns on the dome add to its visual splendor.

Handmade Iznik Tiles

The Blue Mosque’s walls are adorned with over 20,000 blue-toned Iznik tiles, featuring intricate floral and geometric patterns. These handcrafted tiles, made in the famous Iznik workshops, symbolize the artistic peak of Ottoman ceramic craftsmanship and give the mosque its globally recognized name.

The Mihrab & Minbar

The mihrab (prayer niche), carved from a single block of white marble, directs worshipers toward Mecca. Next to it stands the minbar (pulpit), an elaborately decorated staircase from where sermons are delivered. Both showcase fine Ottoman craftsmanship, with intricate carvings and gold detailing.

Windows-Chandeliers

Over 260 stained-glass windows flood the mosque’s interior with natural light, enhancing its ethereal beauty. Originally, these windows were fitted with Venetian glass, but many have been restored. The massive chandeliers, once holding ostrich eggs to prevent dust and spiderwebs, add to the mosque’s majestic ambiance.

The Sultan's Lodge

Left to the prayer niche, is the Sultan’s Lodge, an elevated and intricately decorated space, which was used by Ottoman rulers for private prayers. Built for exclusivity, it offers a panoramic view of the mosque’s interior, allowing the sultan to observe prayers without being seen. The delicate screens and gilded details highlight its regal significance.
